Voted by Whatcar? This year the 2010 line up for 'Small Family car' is set to be a good one with the likes of VW and 2010 green car of the year, the Toyota Prius in the running.

Family cars are an important choice to make with attributes like interior space, road stability and other safety concerns to consider. These top 5 (new or used) cars make the grade by being not only stylish and spacious but by their affordable price brackets and comfortable driving ability.

The Volkswagen Golf Hatchback is a strong looking family car with 5 doors as standard and a spacious interior. Although it is probably the least exciting of the VW cars on this list it still belongs there due to its many engine variants to choose from, including petrol or diesel and a reasonable new or used car price bracket. The Volkswagen Golf could be the perfect car for you and your family if you consider practicality over beauty!

The Hyundai i30 hatchback is a luxurious small family car with special gadgets and features throughout the spacious interior. Enough room for the family and the dog there is also a vast boot area which is cleverly concealed in the small car façade.

The Skoda Octavia is a cheaper family car but with the same space as the Golf and Hyundai. At the height of practicality this car does away with distracting gadgets and gets away with the basics of a small 'run-a-round the Skoda Octavia is more affordable with an average new/ used car price bracket.

The Toyota Prius hatchback is sportier looking than the other models and is a favourite amongst the celebrities. Combined with a strong drive experience and spacious interiors for the whole family this new wave green car is as honest and futuristic as new cars get.

The Mazda 3 is last in the family car race but by no means least. This sporty looking car with its nippy engine ensures you have the driving feel of a much larger model but the space of a smaller. It looks a lot bigger on the outside than on the interior but that just adds to the overall charm of the Mazda 3.
